LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday personally reviewed the flood situation at the Ravi River in Shahdara, where she boarded a boat to inspect the rising water levels.
Speaking to the media, CM Maryam said the province had faced unprecedented rainfall and rising pressure in all three major rivers during recent weeks.
“I have never seen so much water in the Ravi River. Timely preparation by the provincial government saved Punjab from a potential catastrophe,” she said.
Rescue and Relief Efforts in Full Swing
CM Maryam highlighted that over 50,000 residents and thousands of livestock were safely relocated before the situation worsened. She praised the efforts of local administration, rescue agencies, and volunteers, stressing that no lives were lost due to administrative negligence.
She assured that the provincial government is committed to reaching every affected family, ensuring compensation for damages and support for rebuilding livelihoods.
“Water is a Blessing, But Needs Management”
Acknowledging the growing climate challenge, the CM said:
“Water is a blessing, but without proper storage systems and drainage planning, we remain vulnerable. I have directed all departments to present concrete programmes for better floodwater storage and management in the future.”
Punjab Senior Minister Confirms 12 Deaths
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that 12 people have lost their lives due to heavy rains and floods across the province. She clarified that these fatalities were not due to negligence, as rescue operations have been prompt and effective.
She added that:
-
Around 200,000 livestock have been shifted to safe areas with their owners.
-
Relief camps are providing food and shelter to affected citizens.
-
Rescue teams, some working non-stop for days, continue to assist trapped families and monitor flood-hit districts.
She also urged citizens to stay away from rivers and canals, cautioning against risky behavior such as taking selfies near floodwaters.
Moving Towards Long-Term Solutions
Both CM Maryam and the senior minister stressed the importance of future planning for water storage, flood resilience, and climate adaptation to prevent recurring disasters.
With government, rescue services, and citizens working together, Punjab has avoided a major crisis — but experts say long-term infrastructure and climate-smart policies are critical for lasting protection.
